This Saturday May 21, caller Joey Norton of St. Petersburg calls to the music of Florida’s premiere contra band Loco-Motion.

Loco-Motion is:
• Sarah Mitchell on flute, hammered dulcimer & various noisy objects (feet, whistle, drum);
• Sherry Lowe on keyboard;
• Kathy Aagaard on fiddle; and
• Joe DePaolo on drums.

If you want to attend, then we (the management) urge you to do just two things:

  1. Book your reservation online in advance; and
  2. Make your payment/donation online as prompted via PayPal to The Dancing Fish

Please do not show up with check or cash in hand. We are a community dance barn, not a commercial dance hall. Your payment/donation may even be made up to a week after the event—but not on the premises of The Dancing Fish. Thank you for your understanding!

Now you may kindly proceed to:

Omicron BA.2 Variant on the Rise

In Florida, COVID cases have dropped dramatically for months, but new COVID cases are on the rise again.

The Omicron variant was nearly 2.8 times more infectious than the Delta variant, which was the previously dominant circulating strain of SARS-CoV-2. The new Omicron BA.2 variant is 50% more contagious than the original Omicron variant. It now makes up by far most new COVID cases nationally.

  • Get your current COVID boosted if you have not already done so.
  • And get yourself tested occasionally or whenever you exhibit symptoms.

The Dancing Fish does not expect dancers to update us about every change of booster status. Once you established that you have been fully vaccinated, staying boosted at least annually is your responsibility out of concern for oneself and others. We are a dance community that is based upon trust in one another—even in strangers.

Looks as though I (Patrick) won’t be going up after all to Mountain City, Tennessee to spend a week contra dancing with ca. 125 others at the Appalachian Folk School’s Summer Contra Dancers Delight—before proceeding to White Springs, FL to camp, perform and dance all three days at the Florida Folk Festival. See you guys Saturday 21 May when it’s Joey Norton and Loco-Motion.

Florida Folk Festival May 27, 28 and 29, 2022

Family-friendly contra dancing all three evenings at the Florida Folk Festival, May 27, 28 and 29, 2022, at Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park
The ever-popular acts continue. After a three-year hiatus, can the festival survive in changing times?

Contra dance to live music all three evenings

It has been three years since the Inisheer Irish Dancers performed at the Florida Folk Festival in 2019.

Along the banks of the historic Suwannee River in White Springs, Florida, folk artists have gathered since 1953 for the state’s most prestigious cultural event. The 70th Annual Florida Folk Festival – scheduled for May 27, 28 and 29, 2022, at Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park – is one of the oldest and most revered state folk festivals in America.

There is also contra dancing all three evenings with Vicki Morrison and Tom Greene calling to music by The Dunehoppers and Jackson Creek.
